Someone told me I should look into applying for government grants because I am a single mom and student? I am a full time student and single mom who is iving on a very low income. I am barely making it and all it would take is one major financial catastrophe to ruin me. I was told to look into applying for government or private grants, not just for educational purposes but apparently there are grant programs out there for everything from buying a car or home to starting a new business. I did some research and found that most of the grant programs on-line are scams so I am wondering if there is anyone out there who has received grant money for anything other than school? Can anyone tell me of any legitimate grant programs they are aware of or is this all just an unrealistic dream of receiving free money? Any advice would be helpful! Thanks!
grants, or any kind of help, Im a struggling student.? Is it really possible to apply for a grant with out paying for it. I thought that grants were supposed to be free. Does anyone know the website to apply for grants, ending in gov. I figured if it ended in gov, then maybe it would be legit. Oh yeah gov stands for government, or if there are any type of organizations who gives money to students, or tries to help them.
Can parents be liable for student loan defaulting? Its time for me to apply for student loans (In the UK) and my dad is worried that if I default on the loan in the future that they will try to recover their costs from him. I want him to support my application because if he won't I will be denied a lot of free funding grants as they will not test his income! Cheers
Can I apply for British citizenship to go to school for free? I just don't have the money to attend a GOOD school in my field in the US, and I'm not sure if I could apply for grants (my parents make good money, but refuse to spend it on my education - I'm on my own there). I know the UK has good schools, but I I don't know how easy it is for international students to attend a British school cheaply.
Is it necessary to be a US Citizen or permanent legal resident to apply for FAFSA? Hello, I am an international undergraduate student majoring in Music Performance, at the University of North Texas (under an F-1 Visa). I am trying to apply for Free Application for Federal Student Aid to apply for grants or scholarships, but by the time I'm asked if I am a US Citizen and I say no (when filling my profile)... well, it doesn't let me to go on, I suppose. I tried many ways possible but still didn't work. So, do I require to be a US Citizen or permanent resident to apply for this or not? Any suggestions? Thank you very much...

Where can I find grants for tutoring special education students? Hi, I'm a certified special educator, and I'm looking to tutor special education students and at-risk students in my community after school. I'm looking to apply for a grant that may help defray some of the cost. I live in a small rural community, where people do not have alot of money, but could benefit from tutoring service. If you have any advice, feel free to let me know.

Do you think that "free" grant money for college students should be better regulated (no refund checks)? Why do some college students get grants to attend college for free and then receive a check for thousands of dollars to do whatever they want with? This money does not have to be paid back. I am curious as to why the government allows some students to receive up to a few thousand dollars more than what they need for college each semester and then deny other students any help at all because the government is "out of grant money"? Don't get me wrong, I think grant money is a great way to help people attend college, but I feel this money should be better regulated. Just think of how many additional people could attend college if this leftover money went to another student in need. I think each student should only be allowed to receive enough money each semester to cover tuition, books and supplies. If any student has left over money, it should remain in the student's school account and be applied to the next semester. Sure it would cost the government money to monitor how much money each student is to receive, but the money the government would save by not overpaying each student should more than cover this cost. When I mentioned this around someone that got these grants, they went off on me and said that they are entitled to what is left over because it is "their" money. Actually, it is the taxpayer's money. I go to work 5 days a week and work my butt off so that I can pay for someone else to go to school. I don't mind helping someone get an education, but you are already getting to attend college for free, what more do you want? Yes, the student will often use the the leftover grant money for food, rent, a car, etc., but if I want a roof over my head, food on the table and transportation, then I go to work and earn a paycheck. In no way am I saying that people fortunate enough to receive grant money are not deserving. I feel that it needs to be better regulated so that more people can have the opportunity for a better future. Why should Suzie get her tuition paid for AND a few thousand dollars in spending money while Johnny gets absolutely nothing? @Vampire: You said it very well about the middle class. You make too much to qualify for assistance but do not always make enough to pay for school on top of all the necessary bills. I was denied for every loan I had applied for. Plus, since I lived at home and held down a part-time job, there was no reason why I could not afford to pay my own way. Since I did not have a loan, the school required me to pay each semester's tuition upfront in full or I would be dropped from my classes! It was hard, but through a lot of hard work, sacrifice and taking a few years off to save money, I was able to graduate debt free with no help from the government! I had to do it the hard way, but I have been told that I will appreciate it more in the long run because I had to work for it. @Thumbs: You made an excellent point about the refund money being scholarships/loans. This is very true. I know that grant money is often NOT enough to cover each semester's tuition and books at expensive universities so many students are getting loans to cover the rest and cashing them out at the end of the semester. The students will have to pay these loans back. However, this question brought on a debate at a community college I had visited in the past. Full-time tuition at this particular college plus books cost an average of about $1,500 per semester. The amount in grants exceeded this amount and the students get it EVERY semester without having to take out any loans. A few of the students commented that they go to school only because they get a thousand dollars or more each semester in spending money that they don't have to pay back! This is what I feel needs to be regulated. Sorry if the question was misleading, I was referring to when grant money alone exceeds the cost
What Happens to my Student Loans and Pell Grants!? I am currently going to College online,I am moving in as little as 2 weeks, this semester ends this week.I know sooner or later I have to pay it all back.I am not asking what is the best way what I am asking is Since I have to Drop No Later Then The End of Week 8 without being penalized I still have to pay about 600.00 in fees and for the books I already have.Dose my pail grant they have already received pay for all of this and do I still get a refund like I do every semester as before.and will the refund be a larger amount.I was thinking about using it to Pay the Private loans for school so when I go back this summer it will be less of a hassle even though I already know Its going to be quite difficult to get back in after dropping.I have read the school handbook and its only in sentence decision the refund process and in very limited terminology and probably to deter students from doing so and miss using funds,I was also told the pail grant should have been coming to me the whole time instead of directly to school is this true also?If so how do I change this?It is after all my money and me being responsible for it and paying it back.I am sorry ahead of time for asking more then one question I have talked with my school about this in the past so they knew it was coming but now its very limited to what they are telling me unless I directly ask a question and make it specific enough they have no other choice but not to give me the run around,so in all the confusion I would Generally like to know do I get the total amount left after all the fees for dropping my classes from the pail grant which is roughly 4,000,after they take out everything if the pail grant is in fact where they take it from and Can I get the pail grant before the school next time I apply to make sure my money is not being misused for bogus charges.I am single 35 year old father with to kids not in their teens yet and their only parent so moving for a better job I have no other option and knowing what I have money wise what I have to pay out now is Key,latter down the road I will worry about it then.I hope this Long Blog of not knowing someone can help me figure out what I am looking at as far as what happens to my Pail grant and Stanford loan?Thank you so much for taking to time to read and try to make sense out of my gibberish! P.S. If you do not like that my spell check is glitching fell free to go buy me a new computer, and also if you do not know the answer I do not want to her about your taxes they are our kids not yours, this is the reason I am asking being a single and only parent in my children lives after my daughter being kidnapped I do not need you stupid Crap if you do not know.If you are so worried about taxes then stop over drafting you bank accounts and credit cards You big Dummies!I have great credit I was asked earlier so yes I actually took out a loan on my home for half my Collage and have paid it in full.Try typing in Pail Grants smartones and if it spell it right I am happy your crap is working better then mine! My may concerns where it was coming to me and then I would have to pay interest.I did not want to get money sent to me and then turn around pay it back with in a few days.As far as it coming to me instead of the school my private student loan did come straight to me the first year of college and then I knew I had applied for other loans and grants but I never knew how it worked if I needed to take a break, full time including summers for a year its time, but it really will not be rest!Just the piece of mind of not wasting money for school so when I go back mid summer of Fall Semester I start where I ended. Also not knowing with moving if they did send a refund check for anything I would not be here and the new address is being kept away from everyone else for my kids safety because of their crazy A@@ mother! No P.O Box nothing in my name. This Internet site that make money off all our Private Lives,Address,Phone Numbers, even Emails now is just disrespectful. Damn that!LOL,Thats mostly what I have been finding out on my own,I was in the back of my head thanking just to go ahead and do my classes and try to just get by which is going to suck, because It takes a lot of work,Everyone things online College is so easy and its not,Full time for the last year you have to work for it.But I think just trying to get a passing grade and doing my minimum work for this next semester is probably going to be LESS Stressful in the long run instead of going through everything I have learned in the past few days. The only downside to online college is they are very secretive a point and hard to communicate with at times,Even some of the Professor's mislead you with their Question because of spelling and grammar and then you miss a few questions and then its on you not them. But it works for schedule.I was worried no Internet when I move and I would get behind, but hopefully I can find some Hot Spots even if I have to park on the side of the road! Thanks!
Conservatives: Would you (or your children) ever apply for Federal student loans, such as through FAFSA? Would you take out government loans and grants (such as the Pell Grant and Stafford Loans) to finance a higher education? Or would you strictly stick to the free-market and get high-interest private student loans with floating rates? I bring this up because Democrats are planning on prohibiting private companies from giving out student loans. It'll all be Government money now: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703791704575114020658755684.html?mod=googlenews_wsj
Where can I get government backed student grants? Im trying to get some free cash for my flight training.... Im 19, broke, and cant find a job. I have been looking on craigslist for the past month or so, and all the postings are 1-2 hours away. Which I! wouldn't mind applying for, but my dad thinks it would be a waste of gas, and miles on my 1999 for explorer.... I don't really blame him though, her tranny is about to die. Soooo now im going down to a level never thought possible - for me anyways, asking for free money from someone other then family... I feel like such a mooch. But Im desperate, I HAVE TO FLY! I HAVE TO BECOME A PILOT AND WORK FOR UNITED! I HAVE TO GAIN SENIORITY, RAISE A FAMILY, RETIRE, AND DONATE TO OTHER KIDS WHO ARE TRYING TO FLY!!! Someone... ideas???
can you get a grant for school travel in high school? i'm going on a trip for my ap bio class, but i can't afford it. i've been looking around, but can't seem to find any organizations that give out free grants to high school students for this reason, it's mainly just for college kids studying abroad. does anyone know of any places i can apply for a grant? thanks so much :) it's not vacation, i'm going to a remote island with my extremely hard college level class to do field studies for a week in isolation.
Help finding grants, loans, anything to offset tuition and college costs? I am a 21 male, currently a Junior in college. I am the *6th* person in a middle-class family to go to college or take classes (est. $80K/year income between parents). Because of this, it has become extremely hard to find student loans due to the number of loans we have already taken out. This includes the use of FAFSA. There are literally thousands of sites out there for scholarships, grants, free money (if there is such a thing nowadays) and everything else to off-set the cost of tuition. Not that im lazy, but I do not want to spend hours writing random essays in hopes of winning some sort of financial reward. I did this before freshman year and had *0* hits. Does anyone know of a GOOD site where you can simply APPLY for scholarships/grants/etc.? YES, I work, but I get paid nothing which would remotely help me in this situation. And my most pressing costs, aside from tuition, are finding funds for a new computer and text books.
Free Grants from The Goverment..? Have anyone here applied for this? I've tried to research but some of them are so confusing..they said its free and anyone can qualify, and they will help you do the proposal and everything..individuals,teachers,doctors,students anyone can do this.personal or business interest can qualify? Is it true..?
What part of no free ride do you not get? I have repeatedly seen conservatives on this site stating that under the dream act students will get Pell grants.... The only conclusion I can draw from this is that they lack the ability to research or read legislation... And instead only listen to the talking heads.. So I have decided to provide several links to the correct info which is: During the first six years, the immigrant would be granted "conditional" status, and would be required to graduate from a two-year community college or complete at least two years towards a 4-year degree, or serve two years in the U.S. military. After the six year period, an immigrant who met at least one of these three conditions would be eligible to apply for legal permanent resident status. During this six year conditional period, immigrants would not be eligible for federal higher education grants such as Pell grants, but they would be able to apply for student loans and work study. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DREAM_Act http://dreamact.info/forum/showthread.php?t=13746 http://ezinearticles.com/?The-Dream-Act---Immigration-Law-Reform-in-2010?&id=3361262 http://news.jornal.us/article-5049.The-Dream-Act---Immigration-Law-Reform-in-2010-.html http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-s729/text So what part of no free ride do people not get?

What's the simplest computer languages that a Novice w/NO training or background in computers can learn free? I want to use my computer to self-teach myself a computer programming language that I can eventually use on my employment resume, but I am a complete computer NOVICE with no computer training and very little knowledge of any one specific program (I don't use my computer except for online computer gaming and things like socializing on places like Facebook or to compose very simple letters on MSWorks' Word Processor). I've heard that some of the free tutorial websites are easier than others to learn from and that you can do it without having to go out and buy books and that you can set your computer up as a practice lab for the things you learn. (Can anyone give me feedback on this or tell me how to do this?) What is the easiest basic or general programming for someone like me to learn that has the best potential to be in demand for employment that I can start off with to get my foot in the door of a job in some type of generalized or basic entry-level programming position of any type? Please DON'T tell me about how I can go to a community college to learn it because I have been unemployed for over 2 yrs now (due to getting sick with cancer that is now in full remission) and about how there are student loans, grants and scholarships that I may be able to apply for and/or qualify for, because at my age (45), I really don't want to mess with any of that and I would rather try to learn it on my own using my home computer and a good tutorial website that can teach me on a step-by-step basis. Any answers are appreciated.
Student overwhelmed by work, school and bank account. What to do? I'm taking 19 credit hours as a double major and have 65 hours of practicum for this semester. My major necessitates that I be involved in all sorts of things outside of school, many of which take place during the weekend. I feel like I'm constantly going... from 9-9 sometimes at night. I've been at this school for 3 semesters now and this is the first semester I've tried to work part time at the same time. It's very difficult! I'm sure others have done this as well (though I don't know anyone at school who takes the course load I do with practicum AND works. I've got some money from student loans, grants, scholarships, and it helps. But my working 10-12 hours a week helps a little as well. I don't make much - $7.50 an hour. My boss is a jerk about my taking any days off, and he wants me to work very specific shifts with no deviation because he wants me there during peak hours as one of his top sellers. The problem with this is that it's been interfering with school because I've not been able to attend a few functions necessary for a grade. I can work with my teacher though hopefully. But I was thinking that it might be less stressful for me to take out a student loan for the amount I'd earn working (less than $800 a semester) and then focus on school again. My fiance doesn't want us to take out more in student loans and he feels like I should work out what I can with my job because the money helps and it's interest free. I agree, but I'm so stressed out. Also, I've applied for so many scholarships and grants and I am in National Honor Societies, have a 3.9 GPA, am very active on campus and an overall good student. For some reason, I only got a $200 scholarship and the school gave me a small grant. The rest was student loans. I'm frustrated I didn't get more scholarship money. This happens every year. I spent half of my summer applying for scholarships. Also, my boss has already got me scheduled for Christmas and my entire family is stuck in another state and can't come here for Christmas, so I'm heartbroken about that as well. Just overwhelmed! Any advice to someone burning the candle at both ends? Should I just suck it up and make it happen? Thank you so much!
Pell Grants vs Food Stamps for college students, why do people think there's a difference? Some states like mine, NJ, have requirements that allow a college student to get food stamps. My state says you need to be in college at least half-time and work 20 hours at a real job. I make decent money at my job but I'm considering using the food stamp benefit simply because I eligible. Most people wouldn't think twice getting a pell grant for school. For those of you who don't know, Pell Grants are for those in financial need and they're free monies up to 5,500 per semesters that you don't pay back. I should mention, Pell Grants are determined solely by financial need, same with food stamps. Both have the requirement that you must be in college at least half-time, this situation specifically applies to college students, not the general population. Once again Pell Grants are not based off achievement, the only basis they use to determine if you're eligible is large scale financial need similar to food stamps. With this being said, please tell me the differences among Pell Grants vs Food Stamps with regard to college students specifically. I haven't taken the food stamps yet, my pride is in the way, my question is should it be considering other forms of government aide for college students? Stranger, are you kidding me? I would love to be educated on the differences, wise one. Stranger, maybe it is you who doesn't understand the nature of what encompasses Pell Grants. Do understand my question, you have to understand pell grants are determined by financial need EXACTLY the same goes for food stamps. Both are made with the intent to help struggling college students. The 2 answers are trying to apply food stamps to the general population. They're not isolating this scenario specifically towards college students. Food stamps are designed for college students because of the high cost of living. You can't apply the intent of food stamps with the general population. The reasons are completely different why they offer food stamps to college students. It's actually amazing that people think there's a difference. Pell Grant for poor college student= ok Food Stamps for poor college student= not ok? One helps with the cost of education. One helps with the cost of food while you're getting an education. If you think these are drastically different, I apologize for your ignorance.

LDS: I need your kind help? I usually wouldnt mind stupid anti-comments, but I really would rather have LDS answer my qeustion this time. Thank You. I am going on my mission in 13 days. Because I have student loan which I used for my college studies, I applied for an interest-free student loan while I will be on my mission, and to be able to qualify for that, Inland Revenue needed 1) an official confirmation from the organization (church) that I am going to do voluntary work overseas, particularly a third world country, and 2) That the organization I will be working for is under the IRD list of approved charitable organization, for which the church has just recently been approved. The interest-free student loan lasts for 24 months, so it works well with my length of service. I have sent them a cover letter explaining the things that I will be doing whilst on my mission, a photocopy of my mission call (which says that I'll serve in the Philippines, a developing country), and the letter from IRD confirming that the Church is an approved charitable organisation. I have received a response from them but they haven't approved of my application yet, rather they wanted me to send additional information about what the work I will be undertaking overseas entails i.e. information about the duties I will be performing whilst volunteering. Now I sought help from my Mission Office re this and they advised me to search in church literature about things missionaries do other than Preach the Gospel, just to support my application. I have searched PMG, but I haven't found anything. I am not sure as to whether I would be approved of this exemption despite the church having acquired the status of a "Charitable Organisation." It mentions that to be approved, I need to mainly be involved in working for the relief of poverty, hunger, sickness, the ravages of war or natural disaster, or improving the economy of a country that the United Nations recognises as a developing country. It would be helpful if I don't need to pay interest for my student loan when I get back from my mission, but nevertheless I will still be very happy to go on a mission even if I won't be granted one. But I might as well apply and possibly be granted an exemption. Can you suggest possible church literature wherthat will help me in my situation? Thanks Old Timer Too: Thanks for the suggestion, but I'd rather go and be charged interest on my SL, than stay here, because if I delay my mission, I won't go. It has been quite a difficult circumstance for me waiting, so I'd really rather go. The Mission President in my area is aware of it so they contacted the Mission Office in my country, and that's what they suggested, for me to make a letter and find literature which mentions services that missionaries do. I originally wanted to ask the Missionary Dept in SLC, butthat's what my leaders advised me.
Will I always receive financial aid? I am in community college planning on transfering to a bigger university in 2 years. I am a fulltime student, and i applied for financial aid, got full grant because my moms income is low, So my question is, Will I receive grants or will I keep getting free money from financial aid while I am in college? I don't get it, can someone explain? Will keep getting grants or is there a limit? I want to get my masters so would I get grants If I want to keep studying?
Government grants?? I've read about success stories of students getting sometimes over $100K in free money from the government in the form of an education grant. I would need about half that amount to pay for my entire undergrad degree with no student loans or other financial aid. Then I found out from my mom who used to help write grants for a school district, that it's a lot harder than these success stories make it out to be. What kind of information do I need to give the government when applying for a grant? I mean, do I need to say that I need the money to get my degree so I can have the necessary education to invent some kind of new revolutionary network security (my major)?? I thought that government grants were different from scholarships because they weren't bias in terms of you having to write an essay and then either get it or don't out of all these other applicants. I thought you just applied and that was it. So, what exactly is involved in writing up for a government grant? Thanks.
How can Calif afford give illegals free college educations when poverty rate highest in more than a decade? The bill would provide financial aid in the form of community college district fee waivers, institutional aid from CSU and UC schools, and access to Cal Grants (which students do not need to pay back) for eligible undocumented residents. A Senate Appropriations Committee Fiscal Summary estimates the fiscal impact for the 2013-14 school year to be $13 million in Cal Grants, $7.5 to $15 million in fee waivers, and $11.4 to $12.2 million in institutional aid. In the bill’s text, AB 131 refers to AB 504, signed into law in 2001, which allows undocumented residents to pay resident tuition, or be exempt from paying nonresident tuition. Anyone who qualifies for this AB 504 nonresident exemption would also qualify for the California Dream Act, as AB 130 and 131 both use those same qualifications. AB 504 applies to students who have attended for at least three years and graduated from a California high school, registered at or attended an accredited California institution of higher education no earlier than the 2001-02 academic school year, and filed a “prescribed affidavit” if he or she is an “alien without lawful immigration status.” Proponents of AB 131, such as the group, By Any Means Necessary (BAMN), which is a self-proclaimed coalition “to defend affirmative action, integration & immigration rights and fight for equality by any means necessary,” think of the bill as a step forward in the fight for equality and public education. “Winning the California DREAM Act and AB 131 will take us so much closer to and strengthen our whole movement to defend public education,” Northern CA Coordinator for BAMN Yvette Felarca said. “We are continuing to petition the Governor to demand that Jerry Brown sign AB 131 and live up to his campaign promises that he would sign the California DREAM Act if it hit his desk,” Felarca said. BAMN has sent almost 2000 petitions to Brown and is collecting more, according to Felarca.http://blog.stanfordreview.org/2011/09/14/second-half-of-california-dream-act-reaches-governor%E2%80%99s-desk/ California's poor now outnumber the populations of 33 states and 90 nations – and counting. The state's poverty rate last year rose to its highest level in more than a decade – 16.3 percent – as household incomes plunged by 5 percent, according to census figures released Tuesday. The state lost ground much faster than the rest of the nation, which saw a roughly 2 percent decline in household income. Nationally, about 15.1 percent of the population, or 46 million people, were poor last year, a higher poverty rate than in any year since 1993. That incomes continue to decline and poverty increases didn't surprise economists. But the magnitude of the changes did. California hasn't seen a bigger year-to-year fall in household income in at least 25 years. Read more: http://www.fresnobee.com/2011/09/14/2537386/californias-poverty-rate-highest.html#ixzz1XyGjinNZ
Should we grant free college educations U. students seek DREAM Act passage? SALT LAKE CITY — Illegal-immigrant students at the University of Utah called Friday for the state's senators to help pass the DREAM Act this year, which would allow children of illegal-immigrant parents a pathway to citizenship by attending college. "These young people are Americans in every way but their citizenship, and it helps no one to keep them undocumented," said Karen Crompton, executive director of Voices for Utah Children at a press conference and rally at the university. The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act applies to children of illegal-immigrant parents who entered the country before age 16. Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, first introduced a version of the bill in 2001 — saying most of the young people it would help had no choice on whether to enter the country illegally. Many do not remember their home countries. Hatch was attacked at the time by many fellow Republicans who said the proposal would create an amnesty program, and potentially attract more illegal immigrants to come here. The DREAM Act has changed over the years, and Hatch is no longer a co-sponsor of it. Hatch declined repeated requests for an interview. Students at the rally on Friday held signs asking Hatch and Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, to pass the bill now."It is time to pass the DREAM Act. It is time for our generation to take responsibility for all of America's children — whether they were born here or came in innocence," said Theresa Martinez, a sociology professor at the university. http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700062762/U-students-seek-DREAM-Act-passage.html Try saying this in their beloved Mexico. It is time for Mexico to take responsibility for all of America's children — whether they were born here or came in innocence," ? How many supporters would there be ?
Where can I find free money for college or nursing school.? I am currently tring to help a young lady who is graduating from high school this year find money for school. She wants to go to nursing school. She has already applied for the staford loan and the pell grant but she is still about $7000.00 short. She is a now "A, B" student but has a C average. Does anyone know of any goverment programs or anything that could help her. She is a ward of the court with no income.
How can calif afford to be offering illegals free college educations? The hotly debated Dream Act could pave the way for more illegal-immigrant students to enter California universities and community colleges by allowing them to apply for and receive state grants, university scholarships and fee waivers -- the same aid offered to legal residents. It would take effect in January 2013, and is estimated to cost between $22 and $32 million. Senate Bill 185 would allow university admissions offices to consider students' race, ethnicity, gender and income, but would prohibit them from giving preference based on those factors. If signed, it would become law Jan. 1. Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a similar bill in 2010. Brown has until midnight Sunday to either sign or veto the bills. If he does nothing, the bills automatically become law. While the Dream Act promises to change the lives of thousands of illegal-immigrant students by making college financially attainable, SB 185 may end up being little more than a catalyst for a lively conversation about race relations. SB 185 was the subject of a controversial demonstration last month at UC Berkeley when a Republican student group held an "increase diversity" bake sale and sold pastries at racially-adjusted prices. I need to make a decision ? associate degree or going for master? So i immigrated to the united state and i have a bachelor degree in civil engineering from my country , in order to work as an engineer i have to study a master degree in the usa which i have to apply for a financial aid and then pay it back later , in the same time i got a pell grant to get associate degree in information technology (pell grant is a free grant to students who are going for first bachelor degree) , i have been awarded this grant because my bachelor degree is not evaluated here in the usa, hence i am considered without a bachelor degree . so if i evaluate my bachelor i will lose my grant . and if i go for the associate i will lose my bachelor cause i cant evaluate my bachelor later , So any good advise about what is the best to do? thanks
Student housing while in community college? Ok so right now I am staying at my parents house while my mom is home alone, my dad is currently out of state working so i help around the house. The was only to be temporary. Well he's been gone three years and in that time i have been working a lot, 630am to 630pm, teller. Moneys not great, barely enough to make my car payment as my age, my insurance is high, and i have a son to feed unfortunately...well not really can say i regret him i want to be there like a real father but i feel i fall short, there is no other way to describe the feeling, its not him but its me. All I ever wanted to do was study, to walk again but to graduate from a University. I am not old enough to fill out my college FASFA paper work alone and my parents offered no help and turned me down when i asked for their info so i can get grants and scholarships through FASFA. Now with a child i can apply for fasfa and any other student loan. So my son's mom is about to get kicked out of her house where my son stays for the nights and depending on my schedule i find ways to make sure he is taken care of while she goes to work in the day and i get him weekends and most evenings after work till late at night when she gets off work. We live in Peyton, a small town with no college other then one which offers up to college level classes, which i have already done. So i drive a good distance to the closest city for school and work. University's are expensive and i wanted to attend my CC as long as possible till I have to go to my University and transfer my credits over and graduate out of the University. So the mom(my sons mom) came out with an idea i like. We go to college full time pull student loans get an apartment together cut down to part time and hustle hard to get it done and get as many scholarships as possible...I'm Hispanic and no one in my family has ever graduated college, we are of a low income since the economy fell my dads business lost a bit, I'm bilingual, and i have good grades, so i meet qualifications for a few scholarships and grants. The mom...well shes a mom so we think we can get school covered, but up until now i have been loan free and pay my own with cash...with the exception of my car which is on a loan and that's a long story but it was a last resort at that time and even then i hated it and still do. So to the point would cutting down part time to attend school full time using students loans to pay our way through along with any extra cash from scholarships to go towards the loans? Is this possible while going to a community college? If so would it be though private companies like Sallie Mae? Or can something like stafford be used? I have asked these questions at my community college and can not seem to get any answers before being rushed out. the financial aid office looks more like Walmart lines for cashiers

David Leopold, president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, which supports the DREAM Act, told Media Matters: It is simply wrong to claim that the Dream Act offers a "free ride" to college for eligible immigrants. Under the legislation passed by the House last night the DREAM immigrants are eligible for no greater benefits than other lawful permanent residents or U.S. citizens. These include certain student loans and federal work-study programs. [Leopold email, 12/09/10] DREAM Act Provides Legal Status To Certain Unauthorized Immigrants Who Came To U.S. As Children. does a public university have to give a student financial aid if they're eligible? i live on the border of 2 states. i'm considered a resident of Virginia, but i go to a college in Tennessee. this college offers in-state benefits to students from my county since we're only about 20 minutes away. well my parents don't make very much and the fasfa says i'm eligible to go to school for free. the other 4 colleges i applied to granted me a full ride. before i knew this, i committed to this school and now that classes have started they're not giving me any financial aid. it's 13,000 a year and it's too late to go to one of the other schools i got f.a. from. they told me they can't give me any aid because i'm "not a tennessee resident" even though they offer in-state benefits to my county. are they legally allowed to do this?
school and racism? ive been applying for grants and student loans for school and have found that there are a lot of free money out there if your pretty much any race butt white. also how can a school have a spot for race and this not be considered bias when accepting people. i don't understand how you can give money to one race but no the other and it not be racist
Why is college so complicated?!? I have quite an amount of questions unanswered and left pondering for sometime now about college admissions and the business major, so I would like to ask them to the world all at once. Please answer most of them and share a great detail of what you can. :) When I apply first thing to a University, am I applying to it as a whole or to the colleges/schools within the University? What would it take to get into a good business school (character-and-academic-wise)? And if you have any experience with the business world, I would appreciate the suggestions. Is it okay to major in business and minor in fashion? I had planned to start community college before attending a university to save money, but I realize that doesn’t save time though. How can I save time and money? Like can I take online core classes while taking classes at that university? But isn’t it required for students to have already completed their perquisites/core classes before taking some course associated with their major? Is it possible to just take those elective courses in the business department and spend my free time taking my core subject classes online? OR can I go to a community college nearby and attend the university of my choice at the same time? But that’d be a hassle, right? For financial aid, how does that work really? Where and when can I apply? What would I be applying to because does financial aid consist of different “aids” that I can pick from and apply to? Are any of them granted free without having to pay back (or is that scholarships)? I apologize for the confusion. So I assume students apply to the university first and then they apply to the different small colleges? What happens if you do get accepted into University, but you don’t get into their college? A “Back-Up” college? Would these colleges require another essay also? What is the different between majors and minors? Could I major in say…management and minor in marketing and other electives? I can only major in one course right? Say that I have in hand a big internship experience on my resume and at least a decent essay. Would that balance out a low class rank and a low SAT/ACT score to get me admitted? When you apply for a scholarship, they require you to do a specific task and you turn it in and if you win, they mail you the free money? Is that how it works?
lack of independent research? During this six year conditional period, immigrants would not be eligible for federal higher education grants such as Pell grants, but they would be able to apply for student loans and work study. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DREAM_Act http://dreamact.info/forum/showthread.ph… http://ezinearticles.com/?The-Dream-Act-… http://news.jornal.us/article-5049.The-D… http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-s72… So what part of no free ride do people not get?
Is my overdraft in my account yet? I have just applied for a student interest free overdraft with my bank and have been granted a limit of £1000 but it does not appear in my available balance on screen when I check my balance does this mean it is not registered yet or does it not work that way???
Are there any 100% FREE programs to receive govt. money? I have searched for government grant programs and there is always a catch...you have to pay to receive any information or application packages. Then, there is a MONTHLY or YEARLY access fee to research or apply for these programs. I am a full-time single mother and full-time student. I need money ( besides the Pell Grant I receive) to pay for housing, bills, ect. Any suggestions??
Need Free Money? Can anyone help me find a government organization, specifically a grant that will help me pay off my student loans and debt. If you know of a specific organization I would greatly appreciate it. I really need money and fast. I am having trouble finding a job and I am in default on my student loans. Can anyone find me some money? If you know of an organization that I can apply for a grant, that would be perfect.
student aid question? I'm trying to find info on student aid for a friend. It says FAFSA deadline is passed for this yr but can she apply now anyway and find out her elligibility now? Not sure how this all works. I never qualified when I was in college but she probably will. Also, does anyone know any other places to find scholarships/ grants for a single mother with a GED to pay for TN Beauty School? I know that some of the free money doesn't qualify for specialty schools (as opposed to universities and colleges). Any valid info appreciated. THanks!
where can I apply for a free pell grant? I AM CURRENTLY IN COLLEGE AND ALL THESE WEBSITES ASK YOU FOR ALL THIS INFORMATION ABOUT WHERE U CAN GO TO SCHOOL AND THE ONES THAT OFFER ALL THE FINANCIAL AID AND ALL THAT I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHERE I CAN GET A FREE APPLICATION FOR A PELL GRANT SO I CAN START PAYING FOR SCHOOL AND HOPEFULLY PAY OFF THE STUDENT LOAN THAT I ALREADY HAVE.. THANKS!
How can a non-profit apply for a grant? I am inquiring on behalf of a non-profit that recycles children's clothes located on the central coast and known as Lisa Ray's Donation Group. Formerly homeless children and their families as well as children in need attending schools are provided at no cost with clothing donated for free. The organization uses high school students to help sort the clothes and the budget is almost entirely supported by Lisa Ray herself. She needs outside funding to help the organization survive.
Should I give up a supplemental income I was promised (in writing) to help restore my supervisor's budget? Hi, Here is my situation: I am a graduate student in Toronto, I hold a scholarship, I work off-campus (both because the employment could lead to excellent career opportunities after graduation, and because this frees a teaching assistantship position for a fellow student on-campus) for the same number of hours I would be allowed to work on-campus, and my supervisor had agreed to supplement my income for the whole duration of my studies (I have a written, signed commitment) if I were to join the team. I have used my expected incomes (scholarship, work, and supplement income) to get a mortgage for a house. Now, my supervisor found out that the team budget was not well managed and tries to convince me to give up the supplement income, otherwise all expenditures will have to be stopped until the next financial year… For my project, I think have will have only small expenditures, and they can be covered by small grants I have applied for (and those I am about to apply for). I am the only student who has actually applied for other grants in anticipation of minimizing the burden on my supervisor budget. My supervisor is only targeting me because I have multiple incomes, but it is not my fault if the budget was not well managed, if some students spent more than they were allowed to, and if other students do not have multiple incomes. I do not want to appear selfish, but I do need the money. I had budgeted according to all expected incomes when I selected the house I could afford. And I am not yet willing to risk losing the biggest investment of my life… I believe that if some students spent to much money, all the team members (including myself) should pay the consequences equally, not a single individual targeted for its multiple incomes. If I were to accept, I would have to change my mortgage, and some fees would be associated to this financial manoeuvre (including additional interests on my mortgage). I would basically have to accumulate the debt that another student would be freed of. If other students have tighter budget, there are loans that are available for that purpose. Here is my question: Do you think I should give up that supplement income to help restore the budget, and allow my supervisor to redistribute it to students who have lesser income (but who would be eligible for government loans)? All your input would be greatly appreciated!
How can I pay to live in the dorms? Ok, so I know I'm weird, but I really want to live in the dorms next year. I tried to be an RA, which would be free room and board, but I was not accepted (well, I'm in the alternate pool, so I could still get it). My original plan was to live in the dorms even if I wasn't an RA, but now it looks like I don't have the money. How can I get the money? I already applied for scholarships from the school and for grants and all that. But it won't be enough. Can I get student loans to live in the dorms? Or will they only give you money for tuition? How do you go about getting student loans other than FAFSA? How do you get good rates and stuff like that?
Attend your top school and graduate in debt or get a free ride for college? I have a big dilemma. I applied to two universities. George Mason University (Top pick school) and Norfolk State University (last resort/fall back school) and got accepted at both. My top school I really want to attend is George Mason, but the total sum of all my grants and scholarships will not cover my tuition for the year. However, if settle for my fall back school and attend Norfolk State I'll have basically a free-ride for college meaning I'll pay no money out of my pocket because I have financial aid. My main goal with college was to graduate with absolutely no debt/loans. I do not want to spend a large portion of my life paying student loan bills. And for so long I was deadest on not borrowing any money. But now that I know I won't have enough money for George Mason, I'm wondering if I should suck it up and borrow the money. Or should I give in and attend the lesser school and graduate debt-free. {My Question for everyone:} If given the choose of earning a college degree debt-free or with debt, which path would you choose? Would you borrow all the loans needed to attend your top/dream school - no matter how much it is. Or would you go with the “free-ride” - the school in which your grants and scholarships would cover everything? As for me, I’m leaning towards the free-ride school, because I really don’t want debt, especially with how the economy and the future is looking as of now. It will be hard to give up money every month for 10 -20 years for student loans. Thanks for any feedback. Namaste QUOTE: "A lot depends on what you are studying in college." --- That's is true. I figured for something like medical or law degrees, the school attended really matters. However, I plan to major in (Tourism and Hospitality Management), so I hoping that career area won't focus on what school I attend. I calculated some numbers, and on estimate I could end up with $80,000 plus in loans. Way too much right? I'll be out-of-state for both schools. And for so odd reason schools charge out-of-state residents far more than in-state. Why? Everyone is getting the same education at the same school, same programs... but that's life I guess
Who asked this question (hands down, one of the worlds longest questions)? Let me, if I could, go to the Civil Rights Restoration Act. In 1981, you support an effort by the Department of Education to reverse 17 years of civil right protections at colleges and universities that receive federal funds. Under the new regulations, the definition of federal assistance to colleges and universities would be narrow to exclude certain types of student loans and grants so that fewer institutions would be covered by the civil rights laws. As a result, more colleges and universities would legally be able to discriminate against people of color, women and the disabled. Your efforts to narrow the protection of the civil rights laws did not stop there, however. In 1984, in Grove City v. Bell, the Supreme Court decided, contrary to the Department of Education regulation that you supported, that student loans and grants did indeed constitute federal assistance to colleges for purposes of triggering civil rights protections. But, in a surprising twist, the court concluded that the nondiscrimination laws were intended to apply only to the specific program receiving the funds and not to the institution as a whole. Under that reasoning, a university that received federal aid in the form of tuition could not discriminate in admissions but was free to discriminate in athletics, housing, faculty hiring and any other programs that did not receive the direct funds. If the admissions office didn't discriminate, they got the funds through the admission office, they could discriminate in any other place of the university. A strong bipartisan majority in both the House and the Senate decided to pass another law, the Civil Rights Restoration Act, to make it clear that they intended to prohibit discrimination in all programs and activities of a university that received federal assistance. You vehemently opposed the Civil Rights Restoration Act. Even after the Grove City court found otherwise, you still believed that there was, quote -- and this is your quote -- a good deal of intuitive appeal to the argument that federal loans and grants to students should not be viewed as federal financial assistance to the university. You realize, of course, that these loans and grants to the students were paid to the university as tuition. Then, even though you acknowledged that the program-specific aspect of the Supreme Court decision was going to be overturned by the congressional legislation, you continued to believe that it would be, quote, too onerous for colleges to comply with nondiscrimination laws across the entire university unless it was, quote, on the basis of something more solid than federal aid to students. Judge Roberts, if your position prevailed, it would have been legal in many cases to discriminate in athletics for girls, women. It would have been legal to discriminate in the hiring of teachers. It would have been legal not to provide services or accommodations to the disabled. Do you still believe today that it is too onerous for the government to require universities that accept tuition payments from students who rely on federal grants and loans not to discriminate in any of their programs or activities?
Need answers about College life and what to expect. I've been out of high school for a number of years now, and I'm trying to go back. I got a decent job that I do well at, and I got married, had a kid, and got a mortgage. Now I'm tired of paycheck to paycheck in a job I'm not sure I'll stay at forever. I am wanting to attend Tennessee State University for a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. They have a minority scholarship for Caucasian people. I think the only requirement I don't meed is a 2.5 gpa in high school. Life wasn't serious back then, and I had to go through a lot so I am just happy I'm here today. So here's my questions. 1. If I attain scholarships and grants, how long do they last, and do I get penalized or blacklisted if I don't get to use them before they expire? 2. Where do I go to take care of prerequisites, and do these grants or scholarships cover said prerequisites? 3. I work 50 hours/week, how many hours and days does a full time student attend classes? They don't have the Engineering degree for nights :(. 4. How many hours and days per week does a part time student attend classes? 5. Do said scholarships still apply for part time students? 6. Does anyone know how much this minority scholarship will cover? 7. Can some needed courses in math and science be taken online? (this doesn't include prereqs) 8. Is there someone I could talk to at TSU that can help me get an entire 4 year plan made up so I know exactly what to expect. 9. Do scholarships and grants cover book costs? If not I will most likely get a tablet pc or e-book type thing. Are the books available for download? (Not talking about illegal free stuff) I know this was a HUGE post, and I thank anyone who has even paid attention to it. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to those of you who reply. Thank you! ||||||||||EDIT|||||||||| In response to your post, I have to ask about prereqs again. In high school I did a lot of goofing, and had no parents to reign me in. I'm sure I just took basic math's maybe algebra or pre algebra, and just basic classes. Teachers always wanted to move me up to advanced classes, but I was hardheaded. I have no secondary language (currently studying one on my own), and my high school transcript is probably going to look like something that dropped out of a cows' ***. You are saying that any "prereqs" i'll need to take is going to be part of my college course list?
1 can someone help with discussion questions? because my english is bad and i'm new student in the college 1yr An expanded Europe: ideologically sound but realistically unworkable? In May 2004, ten additional countries were accepted as accession countries to the European Union, thus joining the existing 17 full members. The fact that eight of these ten nations were previously communist countries, demonstrates an abiding desire on the part of these nations to partake in free market capitalism. The Eupopean Union (EU) was created with six member countries in 1951 as a trade alliance. Its growth to its present membership of 17 full member countries, together with the 10 accession countries and four other applicant countries, makes the EU a political and economic superpower second only to the United States. Its present membership comprises 455 million people with a combined GDP of 10 trillion dollars. Yet the addition to the EU of 10 countries, 74 million people and 280,000 miles, particularly given that eight of these 10 countries are in post-communist transition, has caused many members some disquiet. One potential problem is that newly-founded businesses in post-communist states will now have to compete on an equal footing with more established businesses in older long-established capitalist societies. The populations of new member countries also experience infrastructures which, in comparison to the more established members of the EU, are underdeveloped. This impacts on productivity and per capita income as well as health and life expectancy. In the case of agriculture, in Poland for example, there are two million farms, and many of these were once reliant on Polish government subsidies which have now been withdrawn. To qualify for EU support, a farm must demonstrate its productivity, and it is estimated that fewer than 50 per cent of these farms will qualify for such backing. One Polish fruit farmer is the first of his neighbours to apply for and qualify for an EU subsidy to upgrade his farm to the standard accepted by the EU. However, he possesses the land and the capital to apply for such a subsidy. His neighbours, however, do not. What happens to those farmers and small businesses who lack the economic resources or the aptitude to qualify for such subsidies? In Gyor, in Hungary, Volkswagen Audi, attracted by the low wages paid to the Hungarian workforce and tax exemptions for foreign investors, moved its division to Hungary in 1993. Two years of negotiations with the EU saw the granting by the EU of a temporary exemption to Hungary on the EU’s law on no tax exemption to foreign investors by members of an EU state. It is, however, only a temporary reprieve and is indicative of the problems faced by new members of the EU when, subsequent to membership, they must abide by directives from Brussels as opposed to having complete national economic and legal autonomy. This may impact particularly severely on smaller businesses when dealing with EU regulations. Yet, ideologically, EU membership is regarded by individuals in a positive manner, since the EU represents prosperity, a particularly alluring prospect, especially for those nations who lived under the shadow of Soviet communism. Many individuals are looking forward to the time when the Free Movement of Workers agreement will come into force once these accession states are granted full membership. Many are applying to work in countries other than their own, wherein they foresee new and great opportunities. One cannot help but wonder whether the divide between the rich and the poor will grow ever wider within what is, after all, meant to be the European Union? One wonders whether, in reality, and in the light of the economic gap between the 10 accession member states and the 17 existing member states, there looms a potential chasm between ideology on the one hand and feasibility on the other? Source Belt, Don (2004) ‘Europe’s Big Gamble’, National Geographic, 205(5): 54–65. Discussion questions 1. Will full membership of the European Union mean the end of poverty for accession states? 2. Is the quest for European Union membership by post-communist states merely related to the acceptance of Western Capitalist ideology?
Help With FAFSA Please? Hey, I applied through FAFSA for student aid. It was precessed on 4/1/09. I did not receive a emailed SAR or a letter yet. I checked the SAR comments on the site. A friend told me I could go back to school to fill out a FAFSA. I guess I was supposed to contact the school first and did not know. Do I need to contact them? As of now I have not contacted them. Here is the SAR comments. What do I do? Based on the information we have on record for you, your EFC is 0 . You may be eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant and other federal student aid. Your school will use your EFC to determine your financial aid eligibility for federal grants, loans, and work study, and possible funding from your state and school. WHAT YOU MUST DO NOW (Use the checklist below to make sure that all of your issues are resolved.) If you need to make corrections to your information, select the 'Make Corrections' button at the bottom of the page. You must use your Federal Student Aid PIN to access your record online. If you need additional help with your SAR, contact your school's financial aid office or the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243). If your mailing address or e-mail address changes, you can make the correction online or call 1-800-4-FED-AID and ask a customer service representative to make the change for you. Based on the information reported on your 2009-2010 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you may be eligible for an Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) depending upon the type of courses that you completed in high school. We will need to ask you some additional questions. You may call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) to provide the additional information. We will send that information to your college so that they can determine if you are eligible for an ACG. All follow-up information will come from the financial aid office at your college. Financial frustrations for a striving student. Any suggestions??? I simply can't win. Here's the thing: I took two years off after high school to be a missionary and to travel. Last fall I decided to come home and go to a nearby University and work to pay for my own school. I am currently working two jobs and taking 18 hours each quarter with a 3.8 GPA So far I've been able to combine portions of my savings and my earnings, barely making each payment. Now the savings are gone, and money is tighter than ever. Because I'm not a freshman directly out of highschool, I'm not eligible for financial aid from my college, and I just found out that through the fafsa, I am no longer eligible for any government grants. Does anyone know of anything else I can do? I've submitted the fafsa, applied for any scholarships I can get my hands on, I'm working two part-time jobs, just to pay for school. I even stopped coloring my hair as one of many cutbacks in order to save money. lol I want to graduate debt-free. Phew. Any suggestions?
Help understanding student loans, grants, etc. FAFSA EFC is 8,000? Does that mean that one can't get any grants, or other free money until the family contributes $8k. What if the family does not contribute can the student apply for for unsubsidized loans? also are those automatic loans to full time students or is it like applying for a regular loan and FICO and credit scores appy. What are other options for someone wanting to attend school with limited income?
WORLDS LONGEST QUESTION...Please answer it...?
My FAFSA stated that i got a EFC of 0. Is it good or bad? I applied to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and i got my Student Aid Report (SAR). It said that my EFC is 0 and it also stated that I may be eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant and other federal student aid. I have applyed to Modesto Junior College (MJC). So is having a EFC of 0 good or bad? If its bad how can i make it higher? Do i have to contact the college or will they contact me? How much money will i get? (A rough estimate, please.) How long will the money last?(apllied for 2008-2009)(it will last a year, right) What can i use the money for?(examples, please) Thank you for the people who answer this and to the people who even bothered to look at this. What happends if i dont use all that money? What happends if i changes colleges, does the money still come with me? What happends if i decide to drop out, which i wont, will i get to keep the money? how long can i keep applying for the FAFSA? Do i have to apply to the Pell Grant or does the college do that for me?

Why do Anti-immigration activist keep saying that the dream act is free schooling? and that all illegals will automatically get citizenship? Why do you think they say this? =============================== The Dream Act - Immigration Law Reform in 2010? Under the DREAM Act, certain undocumented individuals could become legal residents. The first step in this process is for the individual to enroll in some type of higher education, such as a university, vocational school, or apprenticeship program. Another option is to enroll in the U.S. military. If certain requirements are met, this person may apply for conditional residency in the U.S. Upon receipt of an associates degree or a 2-year equivalent within six years of the initial petition, the conditional status can be changed and the individual can become a legal permanent resident of the United States. To be eligible for permanent residency under the DREAM Act, the individual must have entered the United States before turning 16 years of age and must have been in the United States for at least five years without interruption. The individual must also demonstrate the ability to speak English. Conditional residents under the DREAM Act will be eligible for private loans to fund their education, but will not be eligible for Pell grants. Under the DREAM Act, 65,000 students could become conditional residents each year, and eventually become permanent residents and citizens if they comply with current immigration rules and regulations. my source: ezinearticles.com/?The-Dream-Act---Immigration-Law-Reform-in-2010?&id=3361262

Loans, Overdraft, (Borrowing money for Uni Accommodation) help? Right, first thanks for looking at my question, i was unsure of how to phrase my 'question'. I have my student loan and student maintenance loan and grant etc, but the problem is i don't get any more from them until the 28th of Sept 09. Big problem, my accommodation wants a deposit of £200 soon, and the first installment of £1419 on the 21st of Sept 09. Does anyone have any advice at how to pay this? I don't have this kinda money lying around... I have a student account (with natwest) on overdrafts it says: "You can apply for an interest-free overdraft - up to £1,250 in your first year. However, to help you budget we normally offer a limit of £500 in your first term, £1,000 in your second term and £1,250 in your third term" this is obviously not enough... Help? Thanks
Good part-time job for a college student studying psychology? I am currently a junior a San Diego State University working towards my BA in Psychology. After I graduate I plan on going into PhD program (hopefully) for Social Psychology and then hopefully becoming a professor at some sort of teaching university (as opposed to a research university). I have been working at a grocery store part-time for the past 4 years to help pay my way through college because I can only get enough grant money to pay for my tuition and books, but not nearly enough to live on. I have applied for scholarships but I can't seem to get any because a) I'm not involved in any sort of activity, b) I haven't suffered some-sort of serious hardship in life c) I'm not involved enough in my community (don't have the time to be) or d) I know this is going to sound awful and prejudiced, but I'm not a minority. I want to get a new job that is related to the field so I will have a leg-up on my grad school applications and on future resumes. My only problem is most jobs for college students like this just don't make enough. I have about $650 in bills every month and that's not including living expenses (food, clothes, etc). I have to make at least $200-$250 a week in order stay afloat. I still live at home which means I don't have to pay rent, but my parents are pretty bad-off financially themselves right now so they can't afford to help me in any other way except letting me live at home for free. Also, I need a job that's going to be somewhat steady because I can't go weeks or months without a paycheck. Keeping the job I have now for the paycheck and stability and then getting another psychology related job on the side isn't an option. I've tried that when I had to do this 4 month 8-hour-a-week internship and I was EXHAUSTED constantly and my schoolwork really suffered. I already work on average 30-32 hours a week at the job I have so plus 8 hours it was like working full-time and going to school full-time. So basically my criteria are 1) Must be psychology related 2) Must make at least like $10-$12 an hour or $200-$250 a week 3) Must be somewhat stable Any suggestions? Or if you were ever in my same situation what did you do?
ATENEO (BS BIO + free tuition + DOST) or UP Manila (BS Nursing - double quota)? Ok, here it goes... I passed the Ateneo de Manila University. My course there is BS Biology which doesn't get much jobs unless you proceed DIRECTLY to medical school. I'm a valedictorian, so it's pretty much full scholarship. Plus I'm one of the Director's List (top 2%) - fee exemptions, annual book allowance worth P5000 and discounts in various university facilities and shops. DOST Scholar (I can't use it in UP since my course is Nursing), that's a partial tuition grant, book allowance, PE allowance and a generous monthly stipend. I also passed in the University of the Philippines - Manila. It's the leading school in the Philippines when it comes to medical courses. My course is double-quota, that means that we're only about 50-70 students, I think. My "future" job is pretty much assured since UP-M has a 100% passing rate in the Nursing Board Exams. I will apply for the STFAP, and if I "pass" the STFAP, I get 70% tuition discount but full priced miscellaneous expenses. HELP ME!
Cambridge application for mature applicant? Can anyone make any suggestions on what points I could emphasize as a mature applicant for my personal statement? Has anyone had any experience in working for a university admissions office that give me, as a mature applicant, some tips? I have an interesting background, but I would like to know what points that most mature applicants would not even think to emphasize as indeed being assets. Perhaps I have assets that I take for granted and would not even bother to mention. I would like to apply to a college that is not one of the four colleges that admit more of the mature students. Please feel free to contact me. My account is set up to accept messages forwarded to my email. (wave9876@yahoo.com)
Hi, I have a question regarding the FASFA.? Hello, well here goes...I need to figure out how to pay for my college, but my parents haven't dont their taxes for the past two year. They make too much for a free ride (pell grant) and their credit is bad so I can not get a private loan.. So my question is can I apply as an independent with only my tax info in order to get a loan? I believe you have to be 24 to be considered an independent student, but what if I were to be emancipated? (im 19 now BTW..) Thanks any help would be GREATLY appreciated! I'm stuck and dont know what to do!
What would be my chances of getting into a US grad school like Harvard, Stanford etc? I'm a UK undergraduate student studying physics and will be going into my fourth and final year next year (giving me an MPhys). I would really like to do a PhD somewhere and am interested in crossing the pond and trying America since I like the structure of the PhDs offered there. I was reading about some completely awesome research going on at places like Harvard and Stanford but I really have no idea if there would even be any point in me applying. So perhaps you could help? Feel free to make any suggestions for things I could work on: I have got a 1st every year for the last 3 years (I think that's equivalent to a 4.0GPA) and this summer I have been doing (and am still doing) some research projects. One was a 6 week one at my university and the current one is 8 weeks and I had to apply for an outside grant to allow me to do that. I am writing a paper based upon the work I am doing in my current project and my supervisor says it should be published in February, also if the abstract is accepted I will be giving a presentation at a big conference in December. No idea if they care about this at grad school but...outside of university work I play Irish traditional music and have previously won the British competitions and competed in the world championships. I am a good clarinetist too and play in the university orchestra. I know I need to take the GRE tests too- general and physics subject for most places. How long would I need to prepare for those do you think? I'd be looking for entry in 2010. Any ideas about my chances and/or suggestions for things I could improve on my CV?
What can I do to make my credit score go up? My credit score is 601, which is considered poor. I have been applying for student loans from the same place for the last two years and have been granted the loans with no problems in the past, but suddenly, I have been denied. They told me it was credit based. I went online and got a free credit report, and see no changes as to why my credit has gone down, although my score used to be 624. What can I do to get it to climb back up? I need the loans to pay for school and get a job and make money, but without the loan, I can't do anything. I need to build my credit AND FAST. It doesn't say on the credit report, but for about seven months, my phone bill had been late. Could that be why? I would think so, but it doesn't say anything about that on my credit report. I do not have a credit card. Student loans are NOT guaranteed if they are credit based. I was applying through Citiassist. I didn't say the credit is hurting my employment. I said that without getting a loan, I will not be able to finish school and get a decent job. I live in Southern Missouri where everyone is poverty stricken. My degree will help me get a really great paying government job. Without the loan, no degree.
FAFSA.. several questions.? I am currently an international student who will be entering a college this fall. I am expected to have my permenant residency (green card) during my first year of college, so I am thinking that I'd be able to complete FAFSA for my second year of college. Here are some questions I have. 1) Is there any disadvantage I would get for not being able to apply for financial aid my first year? 2) I heard that roughly 80% of educational costs is covered (20% loan I assume?) if my EFC comes out to be 0. Is this true (If I am wrong, please correct)? I know that it differs from colleges to college. 2a) Is there significant difference between private and public universities in their offer of scholarship/grant? 3) Cal grant - do they help students who attend Out of State colleges? Please feel free to give me any extra informations on FAFSA.
Applying For A FAFSA Application Question...? Will i be able to get "free" money for college if i apply again with FAFSA, such as "Pell Grant" in life this year? Reason why im asking cause back in 2002 i went to college for good 8months till i had to drop out (due to very poor grades) and they stopped paying me to go to school. Since then its been very hard saving every penny to pay out of my own pocket for every single month or year just to go back to school. Plus i wouldn't dare go for a "Student Loan", i saw how it can really ruin your life when you can't pay that off (have seen my own friends and family in that situation). To be honest back in 2002 i wasn't majoring anything but just the "basic" till right now---to this day i wanna job as a pedicure and take classes for it. It'll take me 9 to 12 months to get a diploma and wondering if FAFSA people can help me again for free.....Or they won't cause of my last failure in 2002?? PLEASE ANYONE....HELP EXPLAIN TO ME MUCH MORE TO WHERE I CAN UNDERSTAND :) Thank You!
