Does anyone have any tips for attaining scholarships or educational grants not included in the FASFA Program? I am new student at a technical college, I currently have some health problems that were unexpected, and I am really having a tough time financially, although despite these setbacks I am maintaining good grades. I have some aid already, grants have paid for my tuition and books, and I have a small Stafford loan approved for this school year. Which would have been enough, had I not become ill in August and am unable to work and go to school full-time. Any suggestions on grants, scholarships, etc. would be very helpful and greatly appreciated. Also I might add that I have no spouse or family to help me and am responsible for all of my bills and living expenses. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I would not be asking for this type of information, but I have so many medical appointments, hospital and doctor co-pays, and am still undergoing diagnostic testing, so I have no idea what the future holds, have to be prepared in case I have to remain umemployed for an extended time
How Do I Get Grants and Scholarships for an Educational Trip? I'm trying to see the presidential inauguration in Washington d.c. this year. I think it would be awesome to see either the first black president or the first woman vice-president in history. Well i need to rise money so i was wondering if anybody knows how i can get greants or scholarships to go on this trip.(http://www.worldstrides.org/inauguration/default.asp) -you can also tell me any other ideas you might have on how to raise money for this trip...thanks!
scholarships and grants? I know that I can go to a specific university/college or corporation sites to see if they provide scholarships/grants. However, would a knowledgeable person know about a source for all those educational scholarship/grant available out there? moo15700@yahoo.com
Previous medical conditions; educational grants, charitable organizations, scholarships? I've suffered from a severe illness which caused me to be bedridden for several years (keeping me from attending college), and incurred financial hardship due to the many treatments, doctors and medications my family had to pay for. I only recovered this summer, and my father was laid off 5 months ago, so I don't know how I'm going to afford college. My grandfather tells me I ought to apply for grants and such, but I don't know if I'm eligible, or how to apply. How does one apply for grants for college, and under what circumstances are are they generally granted? Thank you. :)
Educational Grants for adopted children? Hey yall - we are in the process of adopting a child classified as "special needs" from the foster care system. Is anyone aware of any companies or any federal programs that have scholarships/grants to assist with college expenses? We live in Georgia and there are no state programs available to assist since he was not in foster care during his teen years.
Is there a reliable website that lists all legitimate educational expenses for a college student? We all know about tuition, fees, meal plans, housing, laptops, textbooks, and school supplies being legitimate expenses. But is there a site (or any source) which lists all possible legitimate educational expenses for grants/scholarships? Would a cell phone, for example, be considered a legitimate educational expense? Thanks to all who help.
Why aren't black males given more scholarships or educational opportunities which they NEED for than anyone? Black males need an education now more than ever, so why don't they get mroe scholarships & grants to further their future? They need it especialyl inthese hard times, and more than others, so how can we help?
Does anyone know if the post 9/11 GI bill will cause one to lose pell grants or unsub. staff. loans? I currently am recieveing enough funding from scholarships, pell grant, educational grant, and stafford loan to cover my tuition. I am wondering if switching to the post 9/11 will cause me to lose some of my funding, if not will I be refunded the money paid by the gi bill to my school since my grants cover my tuition?
Anyone know of educational grants for married, nontraditional students? I got a crappy financial aid package from my college and I need some supplemental aid. I've heard there are substantial grants for married students but don't know where to get them, or where to find other scholarships I might be eligible for. I'm married, started school late (22 and going to be a sophomore), have a good GPA, and I'm focusing on studio arts and French. I've been to Fast Web, so please don't suggest that. Any help would be appreciated.
what are the names of educational charities which i can apply that provide grant are scholarships? im 19 and plan to start uni in september (excuse my spelling and grammar)
Scholarships for National Guard? Okay, I an a proud member of the National Guard, am I am starting University in Aug. I have been applying for scholarships through various sources (including various companies and FastWeb), but I am still looking for more scholarships and educational grants. If anyone knows about scholarships for National Guardsmen, dependents of NG members, or any such military- related scholarships, I could really use the help. Hooah!
This is my final year in college and I am $18,000 short, any scholarship or grant advice? Hey everyone, this is my senior year in college and I have exhausted all of my financial aid options but I am still $18,000 short for the academic year. Does anyone know of some emergency educational scholarships or grants I can apply for?
Claiming Scholarships/Grants on this upcoming Tax Season? I know that this year I have taken out a total of about 2500 in a loan, and then rest was either Pell Grant or Scholarships. My question is, what are the effects of claiming your scholarships that did not go to educational expenses, because I believe that my tuition is like 3300/sems and my Pell Grant covered 2150 of that and another grant paid the rest, so my scholarships which were about 2500 came directly to me as pretty much extra imcome. So would I put that 2500appox. as claiming it as imcome? If so then it would go with what I made this year which is about 8200appox. I am just wondering if It would make my income go up or something, becasue if it did that would be great because I have a son and that would help with the bills. Sorry for the misspellings < > By the way I didnt mean that i would directly just put the extra 2500 on top of my wages section, but would use the proper scholarships/grants form. Judging by the first poster, I would just file my scholarships properly and thats all then right? I dont need to expect an increase in my tax return right? I dont need a tax break as I dont pay anything back. But I will file these properly.
Fundraising ideas for educational purposes? I am looking to finish my Master's degree in Europe and will need money to finance it. The U.S. Government won't fund overseas education (unless the credits are being transferred back to the U.S., which they won't be), so I'm looking for an alternative to school loans. I've thought about selling a couple of quilts I've made and some knitted items, but I need "big" money -- ranging from $15,000 - $20,000. Any ideas? It's also probably important to add that I will be starting school in January 2008 and that scholarships/grants may not be an option (I already received a Fulbright grant in 2003 and had to apply one year in advance). Thanks!
Do federal subsidized loans count as "tax-free educational aid" for the lifetime learning tax credit? I think I am eligible for the lifetime learning tax credit or at least for the tuition deduction, but I read that a person must subtract the amount that they recieved in tax-free educational aid from the amount they claim as paid tuition. I know grants and scholarships count on this, but I can't figure out if my federal, subsidized loans count as tax-free educational aid. Do they?
Canadian Scholarships/Grants/Bursaries for 'Average' students? Are there any types of educational funding available for average students? I do not have ridiculous volunteer hours, I am not involved in any organizations/groups/teams, my family is white and from Canada as far as I remember but not native, I do not have exceptional high school marks. I have incurred a large amount of debt through college and I do not have funds to continue after this year. OSAP will not loan me enough money because my parents have to much money, but my younger brother has VCFS so a ridiculous portion of their income is spent on hospital bills and gas for traveling to and from appointments so there is no money for my schooling. Does anybody have any ideas how I can acquire funds to continue my post-secondary education? I am in Human Services Foundations at Conestoga College and next year plan on attending Police Foundations also at Conestoga College. Thank you in advance
I am going for PHD in Computer science/IT can any one give me information regarding both government and privat? e scholarship/educational grant available for research in india? any special scholarship for women for the research in IT/ computer science? Pls friend i need It immediately
Grants and Scholarships for 2009-2010 school year? Hello! I am not currently enrolled in school yet, but I am trying to get into a nearby college (Mount Olive College) as a special student. I later intend on transfering to East Carolina University. I have a 4.4355 gpa weighted (3.7581 unweighted), and graduated 10/217. I graduated as an NC scholar, a marshall for 2007 and an Honor graduate. I participated with the National Honor Society, The National Art Honor Society, and The Spanish Honor Society. I recieved President's Award for Educational Excellence. I recieved art related awards: Both the Silver and Gold key in the scholastic art awards for two different pieces, and Wayne County Board of Education certificate of recognition. I completed 1 month (or 5 weeks or 69 hours) of volunteer work at an Arts council in town as well. I have researched for scholarship opportuninties, but I either do not qualify for many, or I simply don't recieve the scholarship. I would be greatful if someone could help me, or even point me into the right direction.
Educational grants for career training? Hi, This is probably a lost cause but I would really appreciate it if anyone can help me. In the fall I would like to take this language course to become certified to teach EFL. I wanted to teach English overseas, so I did some research and the first step is to get certified. I looked into some programs and found out that the two premier programs are the Cambridge CELTA and the Trinity TESOL certificate... Trinity college in London runs the place, and they accepted me... the problem is money. The school isn't able to offer financial aid, and "regular" student loans and scholarships don't apply. I work full time (I'm a teacher now) but school is out for the summer and I am at the end of my rope. I want to do this so badly, but I need the money and I have exhausted all my ideas for finding it. I am looking into getting a part-time job as well. What I would like to know is, are there any grants out there that would apply to my situation? What I meant to say is, I would like to know if there any grants that I might be eligible for? Are there are any grants that would apply to my situation? The program is abroad, and I'll be leaving in November... I did some research and there is such a thing as a career development loan, but you have to be a UK citizen because the British consul offers it... I'm not sure if the US government offers such a thing. If you can help me THANK YOU!!! :D
What educational private loan exists where you are approved without a cosigner? I'm short two mathematics courses for my B.S. degree and I need a small loan to cover tuition and fees for Spring 2010 semester. I applied for a private loan but I need a cosigner. What other options are there? I cannot get anymore federal loans and scholarships and grants are out of the question. I work but it's not enough to cover my college expenses. Help me please.
Educational programs to reward high school? Hi, I was wondering is anybody knew about some type of grant or scholarships for students. I go to a very poor school and our Leadership decided that we wanted to award students with good attendance and good grades, but we don't have the resources. Is there any website or education program that funds schools so that we can get these incentives for our students? Thank you for your help! =)
claiming educational tax credit? I am 19 and going to an expensive university for nursing school. have student loans for all of the tuition not overed by grants, scholarships, FAFSA, etc. my parents are cosigners on my loan as i have not established enough credit yet to sign my own however i am paying for my education all on my own. i still live at home as well. my question is, should i claim the tax credit given for education or should they? my parents think that because they sign for it and i live under their roof they should get the money as a sort of 'payment' to them. i think that i should get the money and use it to start making payments on my loan so my interest doesnt add up after my four years of college. i think the money is rightfully mine since i pay for my education in full. let me know any thoughts you have. maybe im just looking at it wrong so i need an outsiders perspective. thanks
Re: Not-For-Profit Organizations? My question is concerning a newer nonprofit organization (less than a year old) that is basically structured in a manner that provides effective outreach programs and charitable services. They also offer educational training, grants and scholarships, food vouchers, rental assistance and even help with employment assistant, transportation allowance, veterinary care for pets, legal aid, medical and prescription drug cost. However (by their own freewill to place limits on government bureaucracy and other restrictions), this type of organization is NOT established or recognized by the IRS as a 501 C3 business entity. With that said, my question is this: If I were to make a hefty donation to such an organization, would my gift be 100% tax deductible? If at all possible, please explain in thorough detail why or why not? Thanks So Much!

What is the percentage of students in the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology that are receiving some sort of financial aid? (Financial aid includes scholarships, grants, teaching and a research assistantships)
What are some businesses that would give money for a student trip? I'm going on an educational and language immersion trip to Spain that and I was wondering if anybody knew of any businesses or organizations that would give scholarships, grants or donations to me for the trip. Question about financial aid and scholarships? I receive a Pell Grant which covers all my educational expenses. However, I recently qualified for a modest scholarship grant that is also meant to aid me in my educational expenses. I am supposed to write a thank you note explaining how this grant will aid me in accomplishing my educational goals, but I already have tuition and books covered. So what would be an appropriate way to make use of the money I will be awarded. What could I say in the thank you note. Another question. Are there specific rules guiding the use of scholarship grant funds? Such as only for education-related expenses, for example? Thanks for reading.
Government Grant Help!? I have a question about government grants. I was able to qualify for the pell grant for the first time in my educational journey but some how my school messed up my loans with Sallie Mae and all of my loans ended up getting can canceled one of my semesters Yikes, I know! So now I am stuck with a $7,000 bill and I am looking for any types of scholarships that I can quickly get or any types of grants that may be out there. I have tried looking online but I can't figure out how to apply for the grants and the scholarships are months off before a decision is even made if I am eligible for them. Does any one have any suggestions. I know it's a long shot because I am white and I don't have any children. It's just myself and my husband so I am automatically disqualified for many of the educational grants just because of those two things. But I am sure someone out there was in my shoes and has some sort of suggestion for me. Anything will help! Thanks! It was the school and Sallie Mae who messed up. They lost a copy of my ID, I re-faxed it to them and they never updated my account. Well now the deadline has passed and there is nothing I am able to do except apply for an outside loan or get grants or scholarships.
Is there small educational loan or grant that I could receive without a cosigner? I am currently attending college and I still owe my school about a thousand dollars that's due within the next two weeks. I have exhausted all federal loans and grants and it is a bit too late to apply for scholarships. My parents have bad credit so I cannot get a cosigner, so does ANYONE know of any good student loans that I could apply for to pay my bill? I need an education

Declaring a PELL Grant on my Tax return? Hi I just got a form from my College and it states that i got $7000 in grants and scholarships. I did not spend any of that amount. It is sitting in my bank, but i am going to use it to pay for tuition when I transfer. The IRS website says that i need to pay taxes on any amount not used for edcuational expenses. This is for educational expenses but hasnt been used in the year it was awarded. Do i have to pay taxes on it?
American Opportunity Tax Credit - Column C? Hello Everyone, My mother and I have been absolutely pouring over this tax credit trying to find information to help. This is the first year we're doing our taxes without H&R Block, and apparently this Tax Credit would mean the difference between owing the federal government 150 dollars and getting a $2000 refund instead...So I need some help, some sort of confirmation, something. I'm just going to round numbers right now, I don't have the paper in front of me but the amounts are relative. I am claimed as a dependent on my parents jointly filed taxes. On my 1040 Box 2 is 7350, Box 5 is 5000. Since Grants/Scholarships don't count (Last I checked) I did Box 2 - Box 5 and ended up with 2350. Now here is the thing I'm hung up on. I looked at this form here (The 8863 Information) http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i8863.pdf On Page 4 it gives the instructions for "Less Adjustments" (And it's not really explained at all) a. Tax-free Educational Assistance - I assume this is grants/scholarships b. Refunds of qualified education expenses - (THIS IS WHAT I'M HUNG UP ON) c. Other - (Not important for me) B is my problem. Every college quarter I take out some extra money via loans. For spending money, books, whatever. Point is, I'm taking out extra LOAN money. But I'm NOT sure if this is less expenses or not. I'm always going to have more than needed for books every quarter (Which is why I did that)..Food/Etc. I'm NOT trying to add those in, I just want to know if that amount ends up as a "Less Expense" or not. I'm really apprehensive here, this could mean the difference between paying off some of my loans or running out to find a job, any help is appreciated. tl;dr I took out more money than needed when it comes to loans, does that count as a "Refund of Qualified Education Expenses?" Append 1 - @Mike W So essentially I'm "In the Clear" for claiming this credit then? Assuming all the calculations come out correctly (Which they have, assuming I have nothing else threatening the bottom line.) This is looking good. I appreciate the answer.
Where are all the RN's? I need help.. not medical, but educational...? I have decided to become an RN eventually ... I am in the very early stages of finding out what all I need to know before appying for grants and scholarships. I'll be the first to say I really don't know where to start, so I have been asking everyone for advice, information, and help on applying to a school. I know there are tests to take in math/science that are required for an applicant to be eligible for funds to become a nurse... I need to reschool myself on those studies before blindly going this adventure alone. Any and ALL information is welcomed... help me help myself ... give me a heads up on what you have learned...what was easiest, and the mistakes to avoid... I know there is a lot of funding out there for this study since there is such a shortage nation-wide of nurses. Where do I start?.. I know enrollment starts in a matter of weeks, and I need to get busy today on being prepared. Please and Thank You.. Craptacular Wonderment
financial aid, grants, and scholarship help!? i got this form from the Educational Assistance Council National Research and Processing Center and i want to know if it is fake or not? it charges me 50 bucks with the applcation and says it i am fully eligible for the aid (scholorships, grants, and finincal aid) also, the school is supposed to help me apply for finincial aid when i start my senior year in 2 months, right?
What's a Good Educational Background to get a Job in Foreign Affairs? I'm going to have my BA in anthropology (with a minor in Near Eastern culture) at the end of this year, and I think I'd like to continue my studies/focus on trying to get into a job working with the U.S. government in foreign affairs (in a sociocultural capacity, i.e. probably as a cultural consultant, given my background in anthropology). I want to be an anthropologist, or at least take an anthropological stance, and I know that the government has need of anthropologists for foreign policy matters. So I have a few questions. First - would a graduate degree in sociocultural anthropology be sufficient? The grad program I'm looking at combines Master's and doctoral curriculum, so I would have a PhD. Or would I need to have a background more oriented around law studies, foreign policy, etc.? Secondly - what kinds of internships are available for grad students looking at a career in foreign affairs? Also, are there any internships I can take while I'm not technically enrolled as a student? Since the grad program accepts students only every other year and the next available year is 2013. Lastly - are there scholarships available for this? Money is tight, obviously; but if I could find a scholarship/grant program for grad students intending to work for the government, that would be fantastic. Thanks - I know this is jumbled, but any help is appreciated. I can speak basic/intermediate Spanish and I'm currently learning both Hebrew and Eastern Arabic. If I continue into the grad program I will probably study at least one of these languages extensively.
Social Security Appeal? I’m receiving SSI and social security survival disability benefits. However, I was awarded survival pension VA benefits for attending school. When I started receiving these benefits they cut my SSI check down. The question I have is it any way I can appeal getting the SSI money put back on my check while I’m receiving the survival pension VA benefits. I really need all my benefits because my rent and bills exceed over the yearly social security adjustments. Social Security says on there site that they dont count grants, scholarships, fellowships or gifts used for tuition and educational expenses. Here is the link!! thanks. http://www.ssa.gov/ssi/text-income-ussi.htm
Are there any scholarship programs for adults who are not recent high school grads? I need to know, because I am a 30 year old woman and I am desperate to continue my post secondary education but I am drowning in personal and living expenses. I am not eligable for any grants that I know of for federal help. Please help, every scholarship I ever read about is for recent high school grads or for grad students and people like me seem to be stuck in the middle stuggling. I read everyday about billions of dollars spent on educational grants and free money, where is it? I have not yet seen any viable scholarship program that would meet the needs of single working, able bodied adults. Yes, all of these things also make us well capable of supporting ourselves but as we all know, education is very expensive and if you are of a working class then you will either have an impossible time or be saddled with a huge bill after graduation. My goal is to enrich my life not to bury myself in debt.
Educational credit fee help? I found out yesterday that I might get more back on taxes with an education credit fee. What is this and how do I find out? They say that I would of have to receive more than what's on my tax form for my school on the scholarships and grants. Would I count student loans as this too?
Do I have a right to be angry? OK here's my story. I come from somewhat of a broken home and dysfunctional family. I got through HS and my first two years of college on sheer motivation and will. My overall HS stats were about a 3.4 GPA, 1900/2400 on the SATs... Nothing mindblowing Anyway I only applied to 4 schools out of high school- NYU (rejected), Fordham (waitlisted), Wagner College (accepted, matriculated) and Duquesne. When I went to Wagner, I had to take out a $20,000 loan to be able to attend because my financial aid package was put on hold because they needed to verify that my mother does indeed live off welfare and hasn't worked since 2004. Anyway, I felt hurt. I had filed my FAFSA on January 2, 2008 and I didn't get the grants/scholarships I should have received based on financial need. Long story short, I didn't return for my sophomore year and went to community college where I received two pell grants to pay for my year at the CC. I had a 3.83 GPA there (got a B- in a general chemistry class otherwise I would have had a 4.0 with excellent classes) and tried to transfer into competitive schools I couldn't have gotten into out of high school such as Northwestern, Cornell, Brown, Colgate, Holy Cross, Bucknell, Vanderbilt, Boston College. Ultimately, despite excellent recommendations and a strong college GPA (3.73 overall), I failed and was rejected by every single school. I feel I essentially wasted a year in community college for nothing. I was accepted into Fordham this time around, but I honestly feel I should have gotten into Fordham out of high school and would have definitely gotten in after my 1st year of college. Regardless I got accepted. I filled out my FAFSA and CSS forms in early February. However, financial aid packages for transfers started to come out in late May. BUT, they have my package on hold because I haven't provided any non-custodial parent information from the father I hate and haven't talked to and who isn't willing to pay a dime toward my education. I don't want to play the ethnicity card, but I'm a young Puerto Rican American from a low income family in NJ who's working an overnight job to save up $2000 over the summer so I can make a 4 hour commute to Fordham. More like 5... (Need to buy a monthly NJ Transit Pass and Metrocard Pass) I'm so angry because I saw this coming. I'm going to get stiffed again on financial aid. All of the packages that I qualify for... all of those grants/scholarships given to transfers with certain GPAs have probably gone out. I'm getting the short end of the stick and if ANYONE has demonstrated financial need I do. I don't want my story to play out like a tragedy but I feel like the educational system has failed me. All I want to do is go to school and graduate. I don't want $60,000 in loans ESPECIALLY when I shouldn't be getting so many loans. I'm so angry and p**sed at the world. I feel like everyone's f***ing me over. I sent Fordham a long letter explaining my situation but I still haven't received clearance for financial aid. I didn't think they'd be so insensitive to my particular situation. I'm just furious. I spent hundreds of dollars trying to transfer into a top school and failed and now the school I feel I should have gotten into is probably giving better financial aid packages to people who don't need it nearly as much as I do. I'm upset. The educational system has failed me. I don't know what to do. If I don't go to school this semester, I'll have to start making payments on that $20,000 loan from my first year of school and I don't have that kind of money! I want to graduate on time! I don't want to lose a year of earning power! I want to go to law school! I'm still trying to figure out what I did wrong. I don't think I did anything wrong. I think it was wrong of them to assume that I have a normal family situation. They requested a letterhead from an attorney and a notarized statement from a family friend BUT WE DON'T HAVE THOSE KIND OF THINGS. We keep our matters private. No one other than my mother and myself know of my current situation. I'm just so upset and emotional right now. I've worked so hard but I still get f***ed over in the end. I could have gone to Rutgers but I DIDN'T WANT TO. I wanted to go a different school. It's just not fair. wow... what a bunch of d*cks. Seriously, people like you make me sick. It's no surprise so many people decide to give a big middle finger to the world
Interest in schooling in Montreal..........? I am a US citizen, and I am highly interested in going to school in Montreal and someday immigrating. I wish to do this for a couple of reasons. I am looking forward to being immersed into a new culture and learning the French language, the adventures I would have in the new country, and the new friends I would meet along the way. The most important factor though (granted its only about 30% of the reason I am excited to do this, is my Girlfriend. yes yes the things a man will do for a woman lol. I asked a previous question about the financial aid aspect in going to Montreal, but I didn't get any really good answers. So I am a little concerned about my decision to go to a CEGEP in Montreal because I was told by someone I work with who used to be Canadian, that the the admissions into a CEGEP and University are quite competitive. I am a little afraid that my current education (just a High School diploma) may not provide me the educational marks to get me accepted into a CEGEP so that I can get a DEC. OK so, HERE is my questions: 1. Can someone make a list of any and all CEGEP (or other schools I can get a DEC taught in English) in Montreal ? (preferably with a lower rate of competition to get in and higher chance of admissions) 2. What are, if any, the financial aid options for an American looking to study in Montreal? ( I am looking for Grants, scholarships, loans and etc? ) I am kind of at a loss with this predicament. I am looking forward to being immersed into a new culture and learning the French language, the adventures I would have in the new country, and the new friends I would meet along the way. OR What are possibilities of immigrating as a skilled worker, if I don't have any of the managerial, professional, and or trade skills that they are looking for? If anyone can help me, please send me an email or contact me on yahoo messenger so that we can discuss it. Thank you for reading my lengthy post ;p ~Patrick
Schooling in Montreal (where? and how?) . . . . .? I am a US citizen, and I am highly interested in going to school in Montreal and someday immigrating. I wish to do this for a couple of reasons. How much is 'discount college' likely to cost? I am saving for a child's college in a 529, and I am willing to pay for the 'cheap college' route in Indiana: - 2 years in-state junior college (local/Ivy Tech). - 2 years in-state university (IU Bloomington or Purdue as a resident student). - Summers at local in-state university branch for any credit deficits (IU branch) - Taking any grants/scholarships/low interest loans that I can. - Likely to be in the years 2020-2024 I'm trying to guess what total cost will be so I don't over-save (and incur penalties for taking the money out of a 529 for non-educational purposes)

does any one know where i can get some educational funding from? i am a british national and ive just been accepted into the american academy of dramatic arts due to starts sept 09 and the funds are a bit pricey. i wanted to know if any1 out there knew where abouts i could get some funding from e.g a grant or scholarship. ive applied for a career development loan but even if i am granted it it will still not be enough to cover the tuition costs. all replies will be great. unfortunatley most places in the uk will not give me funding as i am studying in the states. please help!
Why waste money on dumb students? I know many diligent students who can't afford to be in university because they couldn't qualify for a grant. On the other hand I know some who got full Pell and state grants and blew 10k on marijuana and partying rather than on their education. Why are people like this allowed to qualify for educational grants? Should they be made competitive like scholarships, but still need based? At least show some academic promise. I don't understand why joe blow attending community college needs a full Pell Grant when the COA is 2k. On the other hand a deserving student might be accepted into a flagship public university and can't attend due to financial hardship, and is forced to give up their spot. The grant would make a difference in the former student's case. Honestly the grants should be increased and allow for promising students to get through the educational system without incurring debt. Wasting the money on private schools like DeVry or ITT Tech does no good for society, they are diploma mills that don't advance the sciences or technology. How about passing a standardized test (1200/1600 or an 1800/2400 SAT and top quarter of HS class for starters?), those aren't too hard to achieve and it allows for economically disadvantaged students who will use the help to actually take advantage of it.

Help Non-Dependent with College Tax Return? I am not a dependent I have a son~ I received my w-2s and stuff and I am far along on my TaxAct Free Edition but very stuck on my education part. Okay well Ireceived only 1 1098-T from one college I attended and the primary college I attended told me I wont be receiveing one because I had too much in Scholarships/Grants, thats strange. Well I can look online to see exactly what I received as a grant or scholarship so thats good news for this school but I have no idea if I am doing it correctly. My tuition costs for 2007 totaled to: $6763 My primary school is the only school I received scholarships/grants for as listed: From 2007, I received $4000 in Scholarships, not grants. The grants I received were all Federal. Of the $4000 I used about $900 for books in Year 2007. So the difference is $3100 which did not have educational expenses. So how do I figure what is taxable and what do I do next?

College: Parent PLUS Loans? I recieved a grant & scholarship that between $1000-$2000, but I need more to pay for the remaining cost so I'm thinking about a PLUS loan. The only problem is that my mom & dad have BAD credit so we need a co-signer, but the person we have in mind is a few States away. The only thing is, that person applied & recieved other loans so I'm NOT SURE if he could be a co-signer for a educational loan. Is that possible??? and if so, is it possible for him to sign the loan electronically?
Is it inapprpriate to ask teachers for support money for study abroad? I am a junior in high school. I signed up for a study abroad program for Spain for one month. It costs 7000 total. I am also applying for grants and need based scholarships, and also sending support letters to my friends and family, but since it is educational based, would it be okay to give my teachers, past and present letters for monetary support? What do you think? thanks!
What advice to you have for a student interested in film (directing, editing, producing)? I'm a senior in high school and am coming to the decision "crunch time." My main interests are film and Italian, and it's very important to me than in college I have the opportunity to pursue both in a challenging and quality educational environment. I have applied to the following colleges: Indiana University (accepted with full ride research grant scholarship) DePauw University (accepted with full ride scholarship) NYU (accepted to Tisch School of the Arts film/tv program, have yet to hear about financial aid) Northwestern (have yet to hear) Brown (have yet to hear) Sweetbriar College (have yet to hear) And here's what I'm thinking: I've lived in Bloomington for my entire life, so IU has always been in my backyard. I have a lot of opportunities here, but I've wanted for a long time to get out of B-town. IU certainly interests me a lot more than DePauw (I was accepted into the media programs there but was turned off when interviewing there). I feel like NYU is the typical dream for any film student, and I feel very honored to be accepted, but financing the tuition will prove very difficult. Northwestern has a great communications program but, again, is pricey. Brown seems like it has a very welcoming, challenging atmosphere (plus they offer a dual Italian/Modern Cultures and Media major!). Sweetbriar is where my mom went to school and offers a nice, moderately priced liberal arts education, although I don't really know what they offer as far as film and Italian go... So, I know this explanation is way too long, but if you've made it this far, thanks for putting up with my backstory. Basically I'd like some advice about my college situation. Should I stick to the most financially feasible option or go for the school with the ultimate program? Any Tisch grads with some honest opinions about the film/tv program (I've heard either very good things or very bad things)? And Northwestern or Brown opinions? Let me know....
Anyone Sponosor My Education? Active duty United States Marine with six months to graduating with a Masters, and looking at following on with a PHD in Human Services. I absolutely cannot afford the burden of taking on more loans for post graduate work on military pay, and have had absolutely no luck in finding stipends, grants, or scholarships that I qualify for. I am extremely worried about accruing anymore debt even if I should decide to get out of the Marine Corps... the Human Services field and law enforcement in general is not a place you become rich. The "free ride" the military promises through college expenses is a myth. Here are my educational stats: B.S. GPA - 3.56 - Criminal Justice Administration M.S. GPA - 3.78 - Administration of Justice & Security I'm not asking for a handout. I'm willing to center my dissertation topic on an area of original research in the human services field on behalf of my sponsor in exchange for sponsorship. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm at the end of my rope.
Educational Grants / Scholarships needed immediately? I'm a business major at University of Phoenix (online classes) and I have 2 more classes left but have no way of paying for them. Where can I find a grant or scholarship that may help me pay for these last two classes as soon as possible?
When I fill out my FAFSA does that automatically apply for grants? I live in Missouri and I am planning to go to school in Missouri. I am looking at four different grants ( Charles Gallagher Student Assistance Program, Missouri College Guarantee Scholarship, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, & Academic Competitiveness Grant) and all it says to do is submit a FAFSA. Does that mean that I just do my FAFSA and the government looks it over and decides what Grants to give me without me applying or do I need to apply somewhere?
Can I start collecting scholarship money as a sophomore? I wanna know if I can begin to collect scholarship money and grants as a sophomore, so once I am a senior in high school I will have a good amount of money for educational purposes.
1 day ago - 2 days left to answer. Additional Details 1 day ago What I meant to say is, I would like to know if there any grants that I might be eligible for? Are there are any grants that would apply to my situation? The program is abroad, and I'll be leaving in November... I did some research and there is such a thing as a career development loan, but you have to be a UK citizen because the British consul offers it... I'm not sure if the US government offers such a thing. If you can help me THANK YOU!!! :D Antonio! Go practice!! Ay que testarudo!!
Short-Term Overseas Scholarship/Grant/Work Program? Next summer, I would like to travel overseas with some sort of program. I have a time restraint though, and I would only be able to go for a month or two. I know that there are many programs for a year/semester, but are there any for a short time span. I don't care what type of program it is; it can be a grant, an educational program, or a work program. I would like to spend some time overseas, but my schedule likely will not allow for an entire semester overseas, so I was wondering if any shorter programs exists. If so, please give me a website name. Thanks.
where can i get grant money to participate in an educational summer program abroad? National Geographic has educational programs that take high school students to places around the world. I am interested in the trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, but I don't qualify for the NG scholarship. I was wondering if there was a way to get financial aid to go on the trip because the trip is $6,990. I am a successful student athlete and I feel that I could get a scholarship, I just don't know of any that I could apply for. Please Help!!!

My uncle borrowed money from me, and now I feel weird to be around him? My uncle recently borrowed a considerable amount of money (over $1000) from me because he was having trouble paying his rent, etc. I felt sorry for him so I lent the money to him, even though I will need it to pay for school in a few months. At first he said he'd be able to pay me within a week, guaranteed, but when he came to pick the money up he asked if he could have two weeks to pay me back. Now I'm a bit worried whether I will ever see my money again. I probably will, but I'm guessing he'll probably be paying me in installments and it'll probably be awhile before I get it all back. I wish he hadn't asked me, because I think it has permanently changed the relationship between us. I understand he was desperate, but I can't help but feel it was kind of low to him to ask a young student to help him out financially. I work hard for the grants and scholarships I get, and the money I save up is mainly for my educational expenses. I also don't like the fact that he asked me to keep it a secret from everyone, including the rest of my family. Now I'm just hoping he'll be able to pay me back before I have to pay my tuition, but my other concern is that I will never see him in the same way again. When he came to pick up the money the other day, I felt awkward and stiff around him. I can't help but see him as somewhat pathetic, a man who can't manage his finances properly. I'm trying to be understanding. He owns a business, but it hasn't been doing too well because of the economic recession. On top of that, he is heavily in debt and owes a lot of people money. Now I've become one of the people he owes, and it just doesn't feel right. I just can't bring myself to accept the fact that he'd ask to borrow money from me. He was always telling me to work hard for scholarships and to save up money for school, but I guess desperate times call for desperate measures. Is there any way I can get rid of the awkwardness I feel around him?
can someone help me shorten my work ? the assignment is all together worth 50 points but the one question is wroth 30 points! this is for my education class. assignment- this is an election year and as young voters and or future teachers you should have first hand info. on the educational position that the republican and democratic presidential candidates have. look up each one of their positions on education reform and critique it. so i went on both the candidates sites and went under issues and then to education and read their views and explained what they wanted to do and i tried to critique it but i think i ddidn't... here is what i wrote. Republican candidate John McCain’s education reform policy wants to build on to The No Child Left Behind plan by maintaining the current emphasis standards and accountability however he does not believe in focusing on state averages. John McCain wants to provide schools with quality teachers by encouraging alternative certification programs by devoting five percent of Title II funding money to states to recruit teachers whom graduate in the top of their class’s 25 percent tile or those who participate in alternative teaching recruitment programs. Alternative teaching can be quality teachers but if the certification is rushed then teachers might not be as prepaid as those non-alternative teachers. Additional money should be given to students in college who are majoring in teaching in the form of grants and scholarships. John McCain would also like to give 60 percent of title II money to award teachers directly who teach in failing schools bonuses and for teachers that teach in math and science and teachers who demonstrate student improvement. McCain would use 35 percent of Title II founding would go to principals and teachers in order for them to focus on their school needs. This will allow the principal of the schools have more control over what the money is spent on to improve their school. Under McCain the D.C Opportunity scholarship money will increase from $13 million a year to $20 million a year and benefit nearly a thousand more families that make an average income of $23,000 a year. The program helps parents take their children out of failing schools and place them in a better learning environment. Five hundred million dollars in current federal funding would help to build new virtual schools and support online courses not just for dual enrollment for college students but for regular class and enhancement classes. John McCain would give $250 million through a completive grant program those supporting states that expand online AP math and science courses and computer courses and tutoring support for students in public schools and foreign language courses. This program along with his $250 digital passport scholarship program will allow students to have credit recover courses and SAT/ACT prep courses. The virtual passport program would not only apply to public schools but to charter schools and home schooled students. Democrat Barack Obama education reform plan includes keeping the NCLB act but changing the act so that there is more funding for it but schools are not ranked by standardized test. Obama believes like many other teachers believe that most of the school year is wasted forcing students to prepare for standardized test and not spend focusing on learning the material on an affective time scale. Obama would like to make math and science classes better by recruiting math and science degrees into teaching. The U.S has the highest developed country drop out rate so Obama plans to invest in personal academic plans and teaching teams and parent’s involvement and mentoring in middle schools. He also wants to double the founding for after school programming by double which will not only give kids with parents that work late or live in bad neighborhoods a safe environment to play and get help they may need with homework. Obama also wants to invest in summer learning programs to help students get extra help for those in low family incomes. Obama supports programs such as GEAR UP, TRIO and Upward Bound. Programs like this make it possible for low income families to consider planning for college. Obama makes knows that in order for students to do well the teachers must also be well educated. Obama plans to create new teaching service scholarships that cover four years of undergraduate or two years of graduate and high-quality alternative programs to help prepare more alternative teachers. In order to better prepare alternative teachers Obama will expand on mentoring programs for alternative teachers. This allows new teaches with less experience in the field to be paired with a more experienced teacher that will help them make their class room time more efficient. By paying the mentoring teachers extra money to mentor new recruited teachers more teachers will be better prepaid to teach. Like McCain, Obama wants to increase the pay of teachers who work in more poor schools. Obama wants to ma how should i critique it? should i say i believe Obama will be able to do this or that or not be able to do this or that and so on and the same for McCain? how should i state what i think....to be honest w/ u i think both of them have real good ideas. both will help in different ways.

Is accepting educational assistance from Canada disqualifying for an American secret clearance? US naturalized citizen with no other foreign citizenships who attended private school in Canada. Will this affect my chances of getting a Secret Clearance?
Educational opportunities for the disabled? Does anyone know of any grants, scholarships, or government departments one can contact in order to try to obtain funding for disabled students to go to college? Disabilities include: ADD Bipolar Disorder Borderline Personality Disorder Epilepsy Narcolepsy Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is not for a particular school for the student, but for reference for them to determine a school.
URGENT: How do I apply for these grants? Through FAFSA? I applied for FAFSA long ago but only recently was told by someone that FAFSA doesn't apply me to every governmental grant/loan that I would be eligible for. If this is true, did FAFSA apply me to the following?: Federal Pell Grant Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant Federal Work-Study Michigan Tuition Grant Michigan Competitive Scholarship Programs (<--or are those just individual scholarships I can compete for?) On an important side note, I go to a private art school at costs about 15k a semester. The school is not owned by the government so I can understand that they don't want to pay for it all, but they give me about 3k a semester which is just unacceptable. So anyway, how do I go about applying for all those grants? I always attempt but get stuck on something stupid, like the fact that the Apply link at the Federal Work-Study site is unclickable.

What am I allowed to do with a financial aid refund check? I am getting a $1500 refund check from government financial aid, scholarships, etc. My question is what can I do with it? Does it solely have to be used for educational purposes for myself? I am thinking about paying off one of my friend's student loans because he needs the money more than I do. Is this okay? Could I get in trouble for this if anyone found out? Additional Details: This refund does NOT come from loans or anything else that needs to be repaid. It is from a Pell grant, an Academic Competitiveness Grant, and a 21st Century Scholarship. If I don't have anything else to do with it, why shouldn't I be able to give it to someone in need?
Can you PLEASE answer these questions about your college? Im doing a report comparing 2 different colleges please answer my questions and name your college + tell me if it is online or not. Im pressed for time and i didnt procrastination. Just rant into bad luck. What’s all included in the graduation requirements? Can previous units be transferred? How many? In total, how many units do I need to graduate to fulfill the college requirements? Approximately how many years will it take me to graduate without any breaks? And is there a faster way to accomplish my educational goals? How will I know when I have fulfilled all my requirements? And what are my chances of early employment in my field? Is your college reasonable affordable? Why? Are there grant programs or scholarship opportunities to help pay for my tuition and enrollment fees, books and supplies? What are they? What is the payment schedule implemented? What program(s) should I join to help lead me to employment within my major? How does the acceptance process work? When is best to begin these program(s)? B. Is it costly? Time consuming? Is the program(s) within my reach?

Can somebody explain this college shit... lol? Ok... what exactly is a grant? I know it is money you don't have to pay back for college but there are a bunch of different kinds: Federal Pell Grant Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) Board of Governors Tuition Grant (BGTG) Nebraska Scholarship Act Grant (NSG) Federal Work Study Program (FWS) Student Assistance Grant (SAG) for Part-time Students When would be a good time to start applying for these grants? If you want to get a grant do you have to be going for a certain degree? Like bachelors? Do you have to know what college you want to go to before you start applying for grants? thanks...
Aid question - Educational "expenses"? I am eligible for $15,000 a year in loans and grants I read the MPN and it says I need to use the loans on "educational" expenses. My educational expenses are "0" since I have a 100% scholarship, even with the fees and books it's still minimal so why am I eligible to take $15000 in grants and loans? What's the point of giving it to me if I have to repay the unused portion right away? Can I buy a car with the loans? Pay for housing, food, entertainment, clothing, etc? These are loans, I have to repay them so I should be allowed to spend it on whatever I choose. Thanks. I should add I go to a public state university so it's only $3000 a year or so for 12 credits so I don't understand why I am being offered such high eligibility for loans when my grant alone could cover full tuition and expenses. Can I pay for off campus housing with the loans?
All about France and the French educational system. (MBA Prospect)? Hi Everyone, I am currently living in the United States and would really love to Study for my MBA in France. The Problem is I know nothing about the educational system there. Though I have done a couple researches as to find out about reputable schools out there, it seems like a daunting task right now. There are some questions I would like answered: - I was told that education in France is free; I don’t know if that is true for only French and, EU citizens or if it applies to international student too. -Can an international student get scholarship or some kind of aid/grant? - What is it like for a black foreigner in France? - What is the cost of living like—(pick a state) in comparison to a state like California? -The same question applies to getting a job out there. So, if there anyone out there with some knowledge of the French higher educational system, Kindly respond please. Any help would be highly appreciated. Yes, I do have 2 bachelors degree in computer info systems and Journalism. I am African by birth also a Citizen of the United States so, I have dual citizen from 2 countries. Though, I don't know how that would pan out. I thought most schools teach in English for higher level programs? Thanks for the response thus far though.
Boarding school grant/loan/scholarship? I am a 13 year old 7th grade junior high student. This isnt the way i want to learn. Constant iterruptions and highly uncontrollable students make th educational process for me increasingly difficult. I am a straight A student and desperately would like to attend a Canadian/American boarding school where I can pursue my education without as much difficulty. I probably would go to one except for one problem......money. Anyone have any suggestions about how i can get my hand on any one of these (grants/loan/scholarship) at such a young age? "I PREVIOUSLY DID NOT STATE THAT IT MUST BE A CANADIAN SCHOLARSHIP AS I LIVE IN CANADA!" A CANADIAN BOARDING SCHOOL IS MORE LIKELY THAN AMERICAN
Hi, I'm writing an essay...any comments/suggestions/feedback? It's for a scholarship. The requirement is a well-crafted written statement that describes in some detail his or her individual academic goals, as well as his or her reasons for applying to the Foundation for an educational grant. This is what I have written: When I was born I was pre-mature. I was born at only 28 weeks and weighed about 2 pounds. At the age of 10 years I was diagnosed with Childhood Nephrotic Syndrome, and recently I was admitted into Moses Cone Behavioral Health due to Brief Psychotic Disorder. All throughout my life I have had health issues and have caused my parents great concern and worry because of me. I want to do something for my parents so that they are less burdened. They have had to carry a heavy load raising me, and I want do something to return the favor, to show them how much I appreciate all that they have done to ensure that I have the best care possible. This is why I am applying to the foundation for an educational grant. My academic goal for college is not only to get good grades, but to learn and gain experiences that will prepare me for the future. It is something I will have to work and study hard to achieve, but I will succeed with enough determination and persistence. By becoming involved on campus, I hope to make a difference in something I do. I hope to pursue a career as a pharmacist in the future. I plan to attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for two years and then transfer over to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for another four years. I want to help many people, both as a pharmacist and as a person. It has been a dream of mine to help those in poverty and those less fortunate than me. Although I am still young, I feel as if I know my purpose in life—that is to help others and be an exemplary citizen. This scholarship would provide the extra push for me to study and succeed, as it would lift my spirits and further motivate me toward my goals and purpose in life. I leave you with the words of Helen Keller. She once said, “Many people have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification, but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.” Is there anything that I could add or change? Thanks for your help.
