Does anyone have any information on how to earn money in order to get your Ph.D.?
I have my B.S. in biochemistry, my masters in Deaf Education and Hearing Sciences, and I'm looking into Ph.D. programs for Deaf Education, Communication Disorders, or a related field. I was just wondering if anyone out there new of grants, scholarships, free money for people interested in getting their Ph.D.? I'm in Texas if that helps.

- Most Ph.D. programs in the U.S. are free for the student. Schools pay stipends for students to attend, offer teaching and/or research assistantships, etc. These are usually enough to pay for both tuition and very basic living expenses for the student. You don't need to look for outside money to do this.
- In many cases - not all, but in an awful lot - your PhD will be fully funded by the university, and you may also get a small stipend for living expenses. Usually, you need to apply for an assistantship (research or teaching) in order to get such funding, but that varies by school. If your field does not offer such funding, you could also apply to be a Residence Director or ARD, and that would usually cover all or part of the cost of your tuition and all of your housing cost. I suggest that because, with your prospective major, most universities would be willing to consider you for this type of position. As you're looking at PhD programs, ask about such funding options. Because if you do this right, you won't need outside funding.
